UNB-2020-0282Minerals » Sulphides

Description

Large sample composed of small subhedral cubic/octahedron Galena (Largest Crystal: 2.0 cm x 1.0 cm x 0.5 cm) entwined with white, massive Quartz that has a vitreous lustre. Galena (PbS) is a dark lead-grey mineral with a metallic lustre. Streak is dark lead-grey and hardness is 2 1/2. Cleavage is perfect in three directions at 90 degrees. Galena usually occurs as cubes or a combination of cubes and octahedrons. Galen can also be massive, cleavage fragments, coarse- or fine-grained or fibrous. Quartz (SiO2) can come in variety of colours from white to purple. Lustre is vitreous or greasy and streak is white. Hardness is 7. Quartz usually occurs as short or long prismatic crystals that are terminated by double rhombohedrons and have striations crosswise. Quartz can also be granular, massive or disseminated.
