Opal (SiO2·nH2O) is a hydrous silica mineraloid. It can come in a variety of colours from white to a play of colour. Lustre is vitreous or pearly and streak is white. Hardness is 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. Opal usually occurs as massive, botryoidal, reniform, stalactitic or earthy.
