Opal (SiO2 x nH2O) can be white, yellow, red, pink, brown, green, grey, blue or colourless. Opal can show a play of colours, with Ethiopian Opal known for vibrant play of colours. Lustre is vitreous or pearly and steak is white. Hardness is 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. Opal usually occurs as massive, botryoidal, reniform, stalactitic or earthy.
