Description

Sample of coarse grained Quartz and Muscovite. Quartz (SiO2) can come in a wide range of colours from white to purple. Lustre is vitreous or greasy and streak is white. Hardness is 7. Quartz usually occurs as prismatic crystals that can be terminated by double rhombohedrons and can have striations crosswise. Quartz can also occur as granular, disseminated or massive. Muscovite (KAl2Si3O10(OH)2) can be white, colourless, yellowish, greenish, pink, brownish or multi coloured. Lustre is vitreous or pearly and streak is colourless. Hardness is 2 to 2 1/2 and cleavage is perfect in one direction. Muscovite usually occurs as tabular crystals that are parallel to the cleavage and are often hexagonal in outline. Muscovite can also be foliated, flaky, fine scaly or fibrous.
