Apatite on Calcite

UNB-2018-0032Minerals » Phosphates

Description

Sample of reddish brown prismatic euhedral crystal of Apatite with a vitreous lustre embedded into pink/red compact Calcite that has a dull lustre. Perfect cleavage planes visible on the Calcite forming a rhombohedron. Apatite crystal size: 2.2 cm x 1.2 cm x 1.3 cm. Apatite (Ca5(PO4)3(F, Cl, OH)) can be green, brown, red, yellow, violet, pink, white or colourless. Lustre is greasy or vitreous and streak is white. Hardness is 5 and cleavage is poor in one direction crosswise. Apatite usually occurs as long or short prismatic crystals that can also be tabular, massive, coarse granular, compact, stalactitic, earthy or oolitic. Calcite (CaCO3) can be white, colourless or pale shades of grey, yellow, red, green, blue or brown and black when impure. Lustre is vitreous or dull and streak is white. Hardness is 3 and cleavage is perfect in three directions forming a rhombohedron. Calcite usually occurs as rhombohedrons, scalenohedrons and prisms. Calcite can also be tabular, acicular, cleavable, granular, compact, stalactitic, oolitic or earthy.
