Description
Sample of numerous, short, stout prismatic euhedral Amethyst crystals that has been coated in Hematite giving the appearance of reddish-brown colour for some of the crystals. Crystals are terminated by double rhombohedrons and lustre is vitreous. Largest Amethyst crystal size: 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 2.2 cm.
Amethyst (SiO2) is the purple variety of Quartz. Lustre is vitreous or greasy and streak is white. Hardness is 7. Quartz usually occurs as long or short prismatic crystals that are terminated by double rhombohedrons and have striations crosswise. Quartz can also be granular, massive or disseminated.
Hematite (Fe2O3) can be steel-grey, red, reddish brown or black in colour. Lustre is metallic and streak is dark red, cherry-red or brownish red. Hardness is 5 to 6. Hematite usually occurs as thick to thin tabular growths or rosettes but can also be compact, granular, radiated, reniform, botryoidal, columnar, micaceous (Specular) or earthy (Red Ocher). Slight magnetism.
