Description

Sample of yellow/brown fibrous subhedral Barite crystals with ruby-red subhedral prismatic Vanadinite crystals embedded on the Barite crystals. The Vanadinite crystals have an adamantine lustre. Average Vanadinite crystal size: 0.4 cm x 0.3 cm x 0.1 cm. Average Barite crystal size: 2.0 cm x 1.4 cm x 0.2 cm. Vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl) can be ruby-red, orange, brown, yellow or mulitcoloured. Lustre is greasy, adamantine or resinous and streak is white or pale yellow. Hardness is 3. Vanadinite usually occurs as small prismatic crystals that can be hollow but also can be fibrous, incrusting, globular or compact. Barite (BaSO4) can be white, grey, colourless or various shades of yellow, brown, red or blue. Lustre is vitreous or pearly and streak is white. Hardness is 3 to 3 1/2 and cleavage is perfect in one direction, good in a second direction and distinct in a third. Barite usually occurs as tabular crystals that can be thin or thick but can also be prismatic, compact, lamellar, fibrous or granular in form.
