Description

Sample of steel-grey micaceous Hematite with light brown, almost yellow, thin prismatic Rutile crystals. Hematite (Fe2O3) can be steel-grey, red, reddish brown or black in colourless with a metallic lustre. Streak is dark red, cherry red to brownish red and hardness is 5 to 6. Hematite usually occurs as thick to thin tabular crystals that are often rosettes but can also be compact, granular, radiated, reniform, botryoidal, columnar, micaceous and earthy in form. Rutile (TiO2) can be red, reddish brown or black in colour. Lustre is adamantine or submetallic and streak is white, grey or pale brown. Hardness is 6 to 6 1/2. Cleavage is distinct. Rutile tends to occur as long, striated, prismatic crystals but can also be compact and disseminated in form.
