Description

Reddish brown Gypsum that is compacted and has a vitreous lustre. Gypsum (CaSO4 x 2H2O) can be white, colourless, grey, red or brown in colour with a vitreous lustre that is pearly on the cleavage. Streak is white and hardness is 1 1/2 to 2. Cleavage is perfect in one direction and distinct in the other directions. Gypsum is usually found as untwinned single crystals that show rhombic forms but can also be twinned arrowhead shapes with beveled edges. Gypsum can also be granular, massive, fibrous (Satin Spar) or earthy.
