UNB-2016-0511Minerals » Tectosilicates » Zeolite

Description

Small yellow prismatic crystals of Laumonite with white/colourless "wheat sheaves" of Stilbite. Laumonite (CaAl2Si4O12 x 4H2O) is a white, colourless, yellowish or brownish mineral. Lustre is vitreous and streak is colourless. Hardness is 4 and cleavage is perfect in two directions. Laumonite usually occurs as short prismatic crystals with oblique terminations but can also be massive. Stilbite (NaCa2Al5Si13O36 x 16H2O) can be white, greyish, yellowish, red or brown mineral. Lustre is vitreous but pearly on the cleavage and streak is colourless. Hardness is 3 1/2 to 3 and cleavage is perfect in one direction. Stilbite usually occurs as bladed aggregates of numerous twisted crystals that resemble wheat sheaves but can also be radial, globular or tabular crystals.
